Gum Disease

We often think of gum disease as a condition affecting only adults. However, children and teenagers are also at risk for gum disease.  With gum disease, bacteria and food debris build up on the teeth forming plaque. As the plaque hardens it forms tartar. The combination eventually leads to swollen and inflamed gums. If left untreated, gum disease can also cause a child to loose teeth because of the damage it causes to the underlying soft tissue and bone.

What are the symptoms of gum disease?

If you notice any of the below symptoms, please contact our office to schedule a check-up.

Prevention is key!

Ensure your child sticks to an oral hygiene regimen. This means they should brush their teeth at least twice a day (parents should help!) for at least two minutes each time. Play your child’s favorite song while they brush to make it more fun! The second part of a healthy dental routine is flossing. Make sure your child flosses once a day. And finally, be sure to visit our office every 6 months for a check-up and cleaning.

Treatment

If your child shows symptoms of mild gum disease, known as gingivitis, usually a professional dental cleaning and good oral hygiene regimen will do the trick. If the condition is left untreated and worsens, then other measures may need to be taken such as deep cleanings, oral rinses, antibiotics or other medications.

Small BIG practice. They have several offices but they focus on the little things that small practices have and big don't. Like on-time appointments and taking time with little kids that panic. Have always impressed me.
